As we approach Valentine’s Day, love is a common theme in conversations, gifts, and celebrations. However, as believers, we are called to a deeper, more profound love—a love that mirrors Christ’s love for us. Jesus commanded us in John 13:34-35: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this, everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
This love is not just about words or emotions, but about action! Action is the process of doing something, and one of the greatest ways we can demonstrate God’s love in action is through evangelism and service. Evangelism is sharing God’s love through the Gospel. True love is not self-serving—it is sacrificial, transformative, and revitalizing. It is an act of love because it offers the greatest gift anyone can receive: the message of salvation through Jesus Christ. When we take the time to share the Gospel, invite others to church, or show kindness in the name of Jesus Christ, we are reflecting God’s heart for the lost (Matthew 28:19-20).
Evangelism is not about pressuring anyone or persuading someone to think like you—it’s about demonstrating love, building relationships, and sharing the hope of Christ. Evangelism is another form of God’s Love through service by meeting the needs of others with compassion and empathy. In 1 Corinthians 13, often referred to as the “Love Chapter,” Paul gives a beautiful picture of love in action:
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” ~1 Corinthians 13:4-8
As we celebrate love this February, let’s go beyond chocolates and flowers. Here are some ways to put love into action:
• Share your faith with a friend or coworker.
• Volunteer at a shelter or food bank.
• Write a heartfelt note to someone who has impacted your faith journey.
• Feed the hungry.
• Comfort someone who is grieving.
• Encourage someone who is weary.
• Stand up for justice.
• Give generously to those in need.
• Use your gifts and skills to bless others.
• Pray for someone who needs encouragement.
• Support mission work that spreads the Gospel and meets physical needs.
Let’s be intentional about living out God’s love—in our homes, churches, and communities. When we serve others, we become a reflection of Love in Action in the world around us. As 1 John 3:18 reminds us: “Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” This month, let’s challenge ourselves to move beyond mere words and show God’s love through our actions. How will you demonstrate love in action today?
